24 classes this week

What each one actually is

Written for the person deciding on a tram, not for people who already know the vocabulary.

A dancer suspended mid-fall in the dark, weight already committed to the floor.

Contemporary

Warm-up on the floor, travelling across the room, then a phrase you learn in pieces and run full out at the end. It is the class where most people arrive not knowing what they are doing and leave sweaty and slightly surprised.

The Wednesday advanced slot assumes you can pick up a phrase in two runs. Everything else is genuinely open.

Mon 18:30Wed 18:30 · advanced Wed 20:15 · flowSat 14:00 · 120′ Barefoot or socks
A dancer holding a freeze inside a circle of people on a wooden floor.

Hip-Hop, Choreo & Breaking

Groove first, choreography second. Monday basics builds the bounce and the rock, Thursday commercial gives you a routine to film if you want one, Friday breaking is toprock, footwork and whichever freeze your wrists agree to.

Saturday open is the one to bring a friend to. It ends in a cypher and nobody is obliged to enter it.

Mon 20:15 · beginnerThu 19:00 Fri 19:30 · breakingSat 12:00 Clean indoor shoes
A circle of dancers watching one person in the middle, arms up, room full.

Afro Dance & Afro Fit

Amapiano, azonto, ndombolo and whatever Christian came back from Douala with. Tuesday is the choreography class, Saturday Afro Fit is the same energy with the counting replaced by cardio.

Loud, fast, and the one class where being slightly behind is part of the sound.

Tue 20:00Sat 16:00 · Afro Fit Bring water
A group finishing a routine on stage under blue and pink light.

Jazz Funk & Heels

Sharp, performative, unapologetically for the camera. Jazz funk on Tuesday, heels on Friday evening as the week's exhale.

Heels is open to every gender and every heel height, including none. Trainers are a legitimate choice and roughly a third of the room makes it.

Tue 18:15 · jazz funkFri 18:00 · heels Heels optional, always
A group on mats in the small room, mid-morning light through the windows.

Breath Dance, Yoga & Pilates

The quiet half of the timetable. Breath dance is guided movement with the lights down and no counting: closer to a practice than a class. Hatha is a slow, held, unfussy sequence. Pilates is mat work aimed at the parts dancing keeps asking for.

These are the classes people book when they think they are not a dancer. Most of them stay.

Tue 10:00Wed 09:30 Sat 10:30Sun 11:00 Mats provided
A dancer on all fours transitioning through a low position against a pale wall.

Floor Research

Lunchtime, sixty minutes, no phrase to learn. One question per week worked through on the floor: how weight arrives, how a spiral carries, what happens if you refuse to use your hands.

Anya runs it out of the dance-film work, so it is often filmed. You can always say no and the camera goes off.

Mon 12:15Thu 12:15 Long sleeves help
A young dancer working a step on the studio's wooden floor.

Kids & Teens

Musical theatre in three age bands: 5 to 7, 7 to 10, 10 to 13. Singing counts, acting counts, falling over counts. Every group performs twice a year on the studio's own stage, with no ticket price for family.

Parents can wait in the front room. There is coffee and it is usually fine.

Tue 17:00 · 7–10Thu 16:30 · 5–7 Thu 17:30 · 10–13 Term-time, CHF 95/month
Dancers standing together after class, half of them still catching their breath.

Open Floor

The room, the speakers, no teacher, no fee. Thursday late and Sunday afternoon. Come to practise something from class, work on your own piece, or just use a sprung floor for an hour because your flat does not have one.

The only rule is that you share the space. If four people want the mirror wall, four people get twenty minutes each.

Pay what you can

Four places in every single class are pay-what-you-can, including zero. You do not have to explain yourself, prove anything, or ask in front of other people. Write to us once and it is set up on your name.

Levels, honestly

  • All levels means no dance background needed at all.
  • Open level means the phrase gets taught in two versions and both are correct.
  • Beginner means we start from zero and stay there on purpose.
  • Advanced is the only label that expects something: picking up a phrase in two runs.

What to bring

  • Something you can sweat in. Nobody is checking the brand.
  • Water. The tap in the corridor is drinkable.
  • Indoor shoes for hip-hop and breaking only.
  • Nothing else. Mats, blocks and the sound system are ours.

Before you come

I have never danced. Genuinely never.

Then take Monday hip-hop basics, Tuesday breath dance, or any class marked all levels. Arrive ten minutes early, tell the teacher it's your first time, and you will be given the version of everything that works from a standing start.

Do I need to book?

Not for drop-ins. Kids classes and workshops are booked in advance because the groups are capped. If a class fills up we post it on Instagram the same morning.

Which languages are classes taught in?

English by default, because that is what the room usually shares. German, Ukrainian and French happen when everyone present speaks them. Nobody is going to make you perform your German.

Is the studio accessible?

Step-free from Friesstrasse to both rooms, accessible toilet, and one changing room that is not gendered. If you need something specific from a class, write to us beforehand and we will tell you honestly whether we can do it.

Can I come and just watch?

Yes, once, from the bench by the door. Ask the teacher first. Most people who do this end up in the second half anyway.

Pick a class. Turn up.

Tell us which one and we will make sure someone is looking out for you at the door.
